While growing up as a young boy from the age of approximately 5 or 6 years old through my mid-teens, my father took me fishing with him almost every Tuesday of the year except for bad weather.
Well, this went on for 3 semesters, when, to no surprise at all on my part, the new Principal called me into his office.
"Young man, I've been checking your attendance records for the last 3 semesters and you have not been here once on any Tuesday during that entire time period. Would you mind telling me where you have been?"
I said, "Certainly sir," without the slightest bit of hesitation, "I've been fishing with my dad!"
The Principal couldn't believe his ears and said, "Young man, you have your father at my office at 9 am sharp tommorow. We'll get to the bottom of this!"
My father arrived promptly at 9 am.
The Principal then stated the Truancy Law in effect at that time and asked my father what he had to say for himself.
" Well," he said, "if you check my son's academic scores you will see that his average is in the high 80's and low 90's without even being in school on any Tuesday, never mind every Tuesday."
A puzzled look appeared on the Principal's face after this information was reviewed and he said, "You know, Mr.. Kablinsky, I'd send all of my students fishing once a week if they were even half as successful as your son has been under your supervision."
Not only did I become an expert at catching and identifying an almost limitless variety of species, but simultaneously graduated second in a class of over 200 students!
